Army man nabbed for robbing trader

A soldier who robbed and mauled a businessman was arrested yesterday in Quezon City by operatives of the National Capital Regional Police Office.

Metro Manila police chief Deputy Director General Reynaldo Velasco said Army Sgt. Roy Sambilon, 27, assigned in Camp Aguinaldo, yielded two rifles, a caliber .45 automatic pistol, a caliber .38 revolver, a bulletproof vest, two license plates, a kitchen knife and assorted ammunition.

Two of his cohorts, identified only as Bobby and Raymond, managed to escape.

Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte lauded Senior Superintendent Napoleon Castro, Central Police District (CPD) director for the speedy arrest of the suspect.

Victim Bernard Saw, 32, was walking near his home when Sambilon and his two cohorts blocked his path at the corner of Catolos and New York Streets in Cubao at about 2 p.m. yesterday.

Sambilon and his companions then took the victim’s Nokia 6210 cell phone, watch and shirt. Not contented, the suspects mauled the victim and fled on board a white Toyota Corolla.

However, Saw got into his own car and gave chase until they reached Quezon Avenue, where the victim sought the help of Senior Superintendent Cecilio Aguilar, the CPD Station 2 chief who immediately effected the arrest.

Sambilon gave up peacefully. Velasco ordered the filing of robbery charges against the suspect, who is detained at the CPD headquarters in Quezon City. – Non Alquitran
