Man destroys ma’s coffin during wake

Las Piñas City policemen arrested yesterday an insurance agent who ran amuck and destroyed his dead mother’s coffin during the wake.

Authorities identified the suspect as Alner Ragrag, 25. The incident happened at around 3:30 a.m. at Ragrag’s home in Factor Compound, Almanza 1, Las Piñas.

Some family members reportedly had a heated argument during the wake of Ragrag’s mother, Melchora. She was allegedly killed by her husband Alejandro last Sunday.

Ragrag tried to pacify his squabbling relatives, but nobody listened to him. He smashed the glass of his mother’s coffin to make them stop, witnesses said.

When responding policemen came to arrest him, Ragrag hurled invectives at them and resisted arrest. He is now detained and is facing charges of direct assault plus alarm and scandal.

Last Sunday, Melchora was stabbed dead by her husband in a fit of jealousy, police said. Alejandro then tried to kill himself by slitting his throat. Melchora succumbed to two stab wounds under her right armpit while Alejandro was rushed to the Alabang Muntinlupa Hospital. He was later transferred to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) for treatment. – Nikko Dizon
