An inmate at the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) in Alabang, Muntinlupa City was killed last week after he allegedly went berserk and stabbed two other inmates.
Fatality Jimmy Sabrido had been suffering from a mental disorder, said NBP Director Ricardo Macala, and has been in and out of the prison hospitals ward for mental cases.
Sabrido was sentenced to die by lethal injection for a rape charge but this was commuted to reclusion perpetua in 1996, Macala said.
Inspector Richard Schawrzkopf Jr. chief of the NBP Investigation Division, said Sabrido reportedly went amuck at around 10:15 a.m. last July 25 at Building 17 of the maximum security compound.
Armed with an improvised icepick, he suddenly stabbed fellow inmates Danilo Mercado and Bienvenido de la Cruz.
Schwarzkopf said other inmates managed to grab the weapon from Sabrido and repeatedly stabbed him, resulting in his death.
The official refused to identify Sabridos assailants, adding that the incident is still being investigated. Mercado and De la Cruz only suffered minor injuries, Schwarzkopf said.
Last Tuesday, another inmate, Ronnie Epaya, was injured after fellow inmate Jonathan Arevalo stabbed him with an improvised knife.
Macala said the incident happened at around 12:30 p.m. at the maximum securitys tennis court.
Arevalo, who is serving time for murder, attacked Epaya after the latter allegedly failed to remit the payment for the formers cassette player. Arevalo pawned his casette player for P1,200, Macala said.
Cooler heads managed to pacify the two men. Epaya, who is in jail for two counts of murder, sustained minor injuries.
Meanwhile, a 30-year-old man was shot dead Tuesday while trying to fight off three armed men who robbed passengers of a jeepney in Pasig City yesterday.
Superintendent John Sosito, Pasig City police chief said the victim, Robert Anus, of 3 Salinas St, Bacoor, Cavite sustained a gunshot wound in the head. He died while undergoing surgery at the Pasig City General hospital.
Sosito ordered a massive manhunt for the three suspects, who fled on foot towards Cainta, Rizal after divesting the fallen Anus and the other passengers of their cellphones, personal belongings and wallets.
Initial investigation showed that the victim was on board a passenger jeepney bound for EDSA Crossing when the three suspects flagged down the vehicle along De Castro Avenue, in Barangay Sta. Lucia, Pasig City at about 3:30 p.m. Nikko Dizon and Non Alquitran
