Worker bludgeoned to death

A construction worker was bludgeoned to death yesterday morning after a drinking spree with friends near their work site in Quiapo, Manila.

Homicide investigators of the Western Police District identified the fatality as Eduardo Esperas, 45, a native of Laoag City, and a resident of 460 B-1 P. de Guzman Street, Quiapo, Manila.

According to initial investigation, prior to the incident, the victim with fellow construction workers identified as Jimmy Mallari, Louie Peco, Joseph Edios and two others were drinking brandy at the second floor of their still being constructed building in front of the Quiapo Church at about 4:10 a.m.

After finishing two bottles of local brandy, the victims and his drinking mates went to the nearby Hot KTV and had a round of beer. After finishing the round, the victim, police said, told his friends that he would be leaving. That was the last time the victim was seen alive by his friends.

Police said the victim was later found near the KTV slumped face down on the pavement with blood oozing from his head.

Examination conducted by police showed that the victim sustained a broken skull after being hit by a heavy object, possibly a lead pipe.

Police hint that personal grudge could be the motive behind the victim’s slaying as they struggle to identify possible suspects. – Mike Frialde
