QC inmate suffocates in crowded jail cell

A crowded prison cell suffocated to death a 42-year-old inmate of the Quezon City Jail (QCJ) early yesterday morning.

Doctors at the East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) failed to revive William Leandro after trying for four hours. According to Police Officer 2 Florencio Escobido of the Central Police DistrictCriminal Investigation Unit (CPD-CIU), said it was around 6:45 a.m. when other inmates saw Leandro collapsed in the comfort room of the infirmary of the QCJ.

Leandro was pointing to his chest, complaining of difficulty in breathing. He was immediately rushed to the hospital but died while being treated.

Jail warden Suprintendent Emilio Culang said Leandro was a frequent patient at the infirmary due to tuberculosis.

It was also learned that Leandro was subjected to monthly check-ups by doctors as he allegedly had symptoms of being insane.

Authorities are calling on the victim’s relatives to claim his body at the EAMC in Quezon City.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old stockman, was found dead inside his room also yesterday morning in Quezon City.

Police identified the suicide as Delfin Lopez, of 127 Sarmiento St., Sta. Lucia in Novaliches. His lifeless body was found at around 9 a.m. He allegedly hanged himself using an electrical cord. – Katherine Adraneda
