INC men tapped as traffic enforcers
December 6, 2001 | 12:00am
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority signed an agreement with the Iglesia ni Cristo for the deployment of 3,000 volunteers as traffic enforcers and environmental police.
A memorandum of agreement was signed Tuesday by MMDA Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. and the Society of Communicators and Networkers or SCAN, a non-government organization composed of INC members.
Under the agreement, the 3,000 volunteers are required to participate in the MMDAs traffic management and environmental protection activities in Metro Manila.
The radio communication network of the group would also provide the MMDA metrobase with reports on the traffic situation in the metropolis.
On solid waste management, the volunteers would take part in the enforcement of the law against improper disposal of garbage and the maintenance of cleanliness within the vicinities of commercial, residential and industrial establishments.
The MMDA, for its part, would train and conduct seminars on traffic management and environmental protection for the SCAN volunteers, some of whom might be deputized as legitimate traffic enforcers equipped with Traffic Violation Receipts.
It was revealed that the volunteers could be available by next week to assist in traffic chores during the Christmas season. Marvin Sy
