European Union lauds peace talks with NDF

The European Union has lauded the peace talks between the Philippine government and the National Democratic Front as the Filipino delegation arrived yesterday from Oslo after four days of negotiations.

"The EU supports the efforts of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and the Government of the Philippines to reach a sustainable, negotiated settlement of long standing internal disputes of the country," the EU said in a statement.

The EU noted a durable agreement would serve "as an important contribution to all endeavors to carry necessary reforms for the benefit of social and economic development in the Philippines."

Although Norway is not a member of the EU, the group has been backing up efforts to achieve a peace settlement with the communist rebels in the Philippines.

Both the Philippine and NDF panels said the peace talks progressed as both sides were listening to each other.

No breakthrough, however, was expected even as the two panels worked on an agreement on human rights and international law that was reached before previous talks broke down in 1999. The accord has yet been implemented.

The negotiations began last April 27 and ended last April 30. Oslo shouldered the expense of the NDF leaders and their delegation as a way of helping the process to succeed.
