Ocampo, Santiago survive road mishap

Two popular leaders of militant groups miraculously survived a near-fatal car crash along España street in Manila last Monday night.

Satur Ocampo, 61; and Nathaniel Santiago, 35; who are officials of the newly-formed party list party Bayan Muna, were driving along España going towards Welcome Rotonda at about 10:30 p.m. when their car, a red Toyota Corolla was suddenly hit from the rear by a 10-wheeler truck upon reaching Kundiman street.

"Ka Satur was the one driving when we were hit by the truck. We were on the right lane of the road when the truck suddenly appeared from the left side and rammed us in the back. The impact was so strong that it sent us towards the sidewalk. Sparks flew from the sidewalk and we only stopped when we hit a steel railing after being dragged for almost 10 meters," Santiago said.

Santiago said the car was totally wrecked with its windshield shattered. Luckily, the impact only caused minor bruises and cuts on the hands and neck of Ocampo. Santiago was unhurt.

Santiago said the truck driver, later identified as Reynaldo de Jesus, 46, of Cabaybay, Carmona, Cavite and employed by the GITC Trucking, owned by a certain Gene Ilagan, got off his truck and ran. The driver returned one hour later after seeing that Santiago and Ocampo were not hurt.

"We want to think that what had happened that night was just a simple road accident. But how come the truck driver escaped and later returned? There could be a plot to kill us," Santiago said. – Mike Frialde
