3-cornered mayoralty fight looms in Pasig

It’s a three-way fight for the post to be vacated by incumbent Pasig City Mayor Vicente Eusebio. But this early, only Eusebio’s wife, Soledad, has made public her intention to replace her third-termer husband.

"I’m ready to toss my hat in the political ring. There is no turning back," said Mrs. Eusebio.

Mrs. Eusebio said she will file her certificate of candidacy before the Feb. 12 deadline lapses. Her husband, she said, has picked her from among the qualified candidates in his party.

The mayor ran under the LAKAS-NUCD banner in the last 1998 elections. But Mrs. Eusebio did not say what political party would adopt her.

Observers said two other candidates are eyeing the Pasig City mayoral post. They are former Ginebra San Miguel basketball player Dodot Jaworski and Wainright Rivera.

Jaworski, a son of Senator Robert Jaworski, is a two-term councilor of San Juan. But when he married his wife, Mikee Cojuangco, he moved to his in-laws’ residence in Pasig City.

Rivera ran and lost against Mayor Eusebio in the last elections. He has been making himself visible in Pasig City barangays lately and has been telling supporters he might challenge the Eusebio’s anew.

Mrs. Eusebio is confident that she will get the Pasigueno’s trust and confidence because of a number of projects she has been doing for the good of the city. – Non Alquitran
