Talisay landslide-prone areas warned

Gabriel Bonjoc - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Continuous rainfall over Metro Cebu has prompted disaster officials in Talisay City to warn those living in hilly areas on possible landslides or rockslides.

Christopher Estrabon, head of Talisay City Disaster Office, said among the barangays with high chances of experiencing movement of soil are Manipis, Jaclupan, Camp 4, Maghaway, Lagtang, Candulawan and Camp 2.

These barangays, he said, are situated on elevated areas with presence of soil that may give up to pronounced rains.

Estrabon said they have visited these disaster-prone barangays to advise residents to be always cautious and to brief them on what to do when disaster strikes.

“We’re reminding the barangay officials on precautionary measures because they are the first line of responders during disasters. (City Disaster Office) personnel are just second responders,” he told The FREEMAN in Cebuano.

Chief Inspector Randy Mendaros, chief of Talisay City Fire Department, said his men were already given instructions on what to do when calamity strikes.

Fire department workers are part of the city’s disaster team. They help clear soil or rocks that may block the road after a landslide or rockslide.  (FREEMAN)
