CEBU, Philippines – The Mandaue City public information office has clarified that the five-day class suspension imposed by the Department of Education-Mandaue City is for both public and private elementary and high schools.

Last week, in a memorandum dated January 18, DepEd-Mandaue City schools division superintendent Arden Monisit ordered suspension of classes for five days starting this Monday until January 29 in the whole division of Mandaue.

This is to give pupils and students opportunity to take part of the 51st International Eucharistic Congress and to decongest traffic as well.

Cebu is hosting the congress from January 24 to 31.

Mandaue City will host some major events which include the series of Theological Symposium at the Cebu Doctors' University, the 112th Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) at Oakridge Pavilion and the Youth Day on January 28-29 in Mandani Bay at the North Reclamation Area.

The city will also host the Parish Encounters on January 27 in its four local parishes, namely San Roque Parish in Subangdaku, National Shrine of St. Joseph in Centro, the Gethsemane Church and the Holy Family Parish in Maguikay.

IEC is an international gathering of people which aims to promote an awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Catholic Church, help improve in the understanding and celebration of the liturgy and draw attention to the social dimension of the Eucharist.
