Man stabs college student in Lapu-Lapu

CEBU, Philippines – A 20-year-old man was reportedly stabbed several times by his own neighbor while walking on the street in Sitio Humay-Humay, Barangay Pajo, Lapu-Lapu City yesterday.

Vince Lloyd Malingin, a resident in the area and a college student, reportedly came from sending his girlfriend home when alleged suspect Jeffrey Estiola, 32, grabbed his arm and stabbed him around 12:30 dawn.

"Ang biktima gikan naghatod sa uyab sa balay niini ug niagi atubangan sa balay sa suspect. Kalit nga gigunitan sa suspect ang kamot ug gidunggab sa makadaghang higayon," said Police Officer 3 Lydo Pinos, investigator at the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office - Homicide Section.

Both live in adjacent areas in the barangay, Pinos said.

"Ang biktima nagpuyo atubangan sa Humay-Humay Cemetery while ang suspect nagpuyo luyo sa sementeryo," he said.

Pinos said the victim managed to escape from the suspect's hands, rushing back to his girlfriend's house to seek help.

"Nakaangkon siya og samad sa different parts sa iyahang lawas. Naa pa siya sa Mactan Doctor's Hospital hangtod karon," Pinos added.

Investigation revealed that the suspect, who formerly worked in an inter-island operating ship, may have personal grudge on Malingin.

"Posibleng nasuyaan o gi-trippingan ang biktima. Dili sad mi kaingon kung naka-drugs ang suspect," Pinos said, adding they are yet to conduct a follow-up investigation into the incident.

Pinos said they were not able to recover the unidentified bladed weapon used by the suspect since the latter may have thrown it somewhere after he committed the crime. Estiola was immediately arrested by the responding tourist police in the city and is currently jailed at LCPO Holding Cell.

Pinos said the suspect will face charges of frustrated homicide. (FREEMAN)
