LGBT Code set for discussion

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Mandaue City Council is scheduled to discuss in its regular session next week the pending Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Intersexed, Queer (LGBTIQ) Code. The proposed ordinance was already approved on first reading last September. A public hearing was also successfully conducted last October 8.

Roger Paller, the city information officer, said the City Council is expected to tackle the provisions next week.

If there will be no more questions and amendments, it will be approved on the second and final reading.

According to the proposed ordinance, “promoting and upholding the rights” of the LGBTIQ people will “not only enhance their freedom, welfare and dignity as humans, it will also promote social justice as a whole and will contribute in the creation of a human rights culture in the society.”

“Stigma and discrimination still pervade at their worst; abuse and violence are left undocumented, especially against people with diverse sexual orientation and gender identities,” the proposed law reads. — Liv G. Campo (FREEMAN)
