Claims of NBI link fail to save man from arrest

Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A man who was about to be arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm invoked his alleged connection with the National Bureau of Investigation but ended up arrested anyway.

Police were not convinced when Jorge Agang, 38, claimed that he works as an NBI clearance processing officer in the agency’s satellite office at the J Centre Mall on A.S. Fortuna Street, Mandaue City.

Agang, a native of Tabuelan, Cebu who is presently living in Barangay Banilad, Mandaue City, was having dinner inside an eatery in Sitio Calderohan, Barangay Maguikay on Wednesday evening when personnel from the Casuntingan Police Station staged the arrest.

The arrest came after a concerned citizen tipped the police of the presence of an armed person in the area.

As soon as authorities arrived in the place, they were able to positively notice the .45 caliber pistol tucked in Agang’s waist.

During the frisk that followed his arrest, the police discovered two magazines from him. They also found out that his gun was loaded with 12 live ammos.

However, Agang could not present the gun’s license or a permit from the police to carry the same, according to Police Officer 2 Jay-R Galabin of Casuntingan police.

Galabin denied reports that the suspect was nabbed because he was drunk and went wild in the area. He said Agang was arrested primarily for brining an undocumented firearm.

Agang also failed to present to the police an identification card that could prove his alleged NBI connection, Galabin added.

The suspect is currently detained at the Casuntingan Police Station pending the police’s filing of an illegal possession of firearm with live ammunition case against him on Monday.  (FREEMAN)
