Falling container van hurts 2, crushes bike

Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – A motorist sustained severe injuries on the head while another woman was also injured after a 20-footer container van fell on them on Sunday morning in Sitio Kalderohan, Barangay Maguikay, Mandaue City.

The victims were identified as Leonardo Ceniza, 49, resident of Barangay Tingub and Cristell Sumugat, 18, resident of Maguikay.

Investigator PO2 Cerdena of Mandaue City Traffic Police Division said Ceniza was on his way home onboard his motorcycle while the trailer truck was driven by Albert Simbajon, 49, also a resident of Maguikay.

Cerdena said the trailer truck was loaded with three 20-footer vans. Simbajon was said to be having difficulty maneuvering it as he was not accompanied by a truck boy.

While Simbajon worked his way through a narrow road, one of the container vans got entangled with an electric wire, causing it to fall and hit Ceniza on the opposite lane and Sumugat who was walking by the roadside.

Although Ceniza noticed the falling and was able to jump off from his motorcycle, the tip of the container van still hit his forehead.

Ceniza got his eye portions injured while his motorcycle was totally wrecked.

For her part, Sumugat tried to run away but a portion of the container van also hit her after she stumbled on the road. She sustained bruises.

Simbajon voluntarily surrendered to the traffic police.

Simbajon is presently detained at Casuntingan Police Station pending the filing of appropriate charges against him.
