Lapu-Lapu exec downplays El Niño effects

Christell Fatima M. Tudtud - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Amid reports of an impending mild El Niño next month, the disaster official in Lapu-Lapu City said the city will not be easily affected by the warm temperature.

"Ang most likely to be affected ana kay mga agricultural lands," said Andy Berame, deputy officer of the City Disaster Management Office yesterday.

This is because the city is surrounded with bodies of water, Berame said.

As to possible water loss in some parts of the city, Berame said they can request the city's fire department for water consumption.

The residents have water connections from Metro Cebu Water District or deep-wells, according to Berame.  He also said the usage of water wells are monitored for their safety as they might result to contamination.

El Niño was earlier predicted to be felt in the first quarter of 2015 but it was then forecast to enter in the middle of the year. — (FREEMAN)
