Mandaue bans trikes from major roads

CEBU, Philippines – Tricycles in Mandaue City can no longer ply major thoroughfares in the city.

Erwin Ermac, director of Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue, said the Department of Public Works and Highways has called his attention over tricycles that ply the city’s major thoroughfares, contributing to traffic problems.

Because of this, they have already banned these public vehicles.

Ermac added that traffic congestion is felt along M.L. Quezon Street in Barangay Maguikay, M.C. Briones national highway, Hernan Cortes Street, A.S. Fortuna Street and Plaridel Street due to the presence of these tricycles.

However, he assured the riding public his office will be calling all public utility jeepney operators in the city to a meeting on January 14 for the planned rerouting on all routes leading to Foodland and Country Mall.

Ermac also announced that their operation against colorum tricycles in the city has been ongoing.

Believing that the only way to prevent colorum tricycles from plying is to issue them TOP for their violation, Ermac said they are now contemplating on crafting this new policy.

Once this will be implemented, colorum tricycles will be made to pay a fine of P7,000.

At present, colorum tricycles apprehended by the city are only fined P500 so Ermac said owners and operators can  still have their impounded tricycles back.

At present, there are around 7,000 colorum tricycles plying the city streets of Mandaue while only 3,000 are registered with the city government.
