Talisay dad: Fix dangling cable wires

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – A neophyte legislator in Talisay City yesterday urged utility service firms and concerned agencies to fix the dangling wires of their respective companies to prevent electrocution of people.

City Councilor Aldin Diaz, chairman of the Committee on Information Technology, said he wants the city government to set up underground cables to replace the “ugly overhead wires.”

In his proposed resolution, Diaz is asking Mayor Johnny De los Reyes to direct the City Engineering Department and the City Planning and Development Department to explore underground cabling together with Visayan Electric Company or other electric companies.

According to Diaz, the city should conduct experimental setup of underground cables. The dangling wires, Diaz said, pose hazard to the public, adding that electrocution cases remain a general concern of the public.

“The underground cables require a narrower band of land to install and it serves a significant purpose of making the power lines less susceptible to outages during high wind thunderstorms,” Diaz said.

He added that under-ground cable poses no hazard to low flying aircraft.

Diaz said underground cable is much less subject to conductor theft, illegal connections, sabotage, and damage from armed conflict.

Meanwhile, Diaz is requesting the mayor through the City Social Welfare and Development to make an update pertaining to the installation of electricity to the homes of the indigent constituents.

Yesterday, De los Reyes told City Hall employees during the flag raising ceremony regarding the installation of electricity to the homes of the indigent constituents.

“Having electricity can make the daily activities of the indigent constituents easier and more comfortable and well-lighted homes also become a deterrent factor for possible, eminent crimes,” he added.
