Jose P. Sollano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – The Lapu-Lapu City Council has passed a resolution requesting the City Health Office and different health offices to conduct health awareness campaigns on Ebola Virus Disease in the barangays.

The resolution, introduced by Association of Barangay Councils President Jose Dungog, earned the support of the members of the City Council.

The resolution said EVD is now considered a dreaded disease by World Health Organization.

The resolution further said Ebola virus can be transmitted from one person to another.

Infected areas include countries in West Africa.

"There are many persons who are coming in our country as visitors or tourists who may be carriers of the said disease," the resolution said.

There are also many overseas Filipino workers coming home this Christmas season to visit their loved ones, the resolution said. This, it said, is all the more reason to be vigilant against the virus.

Councilor Dungog said people are somewhat ignorant and authorities are not familiar with the onset of this disease and its prevention.

He believes that proper awareness on Ebola virus is important for the people at the barangay level.
