JVR leads declogging ops
CEBU, Philippines - Talisay City Mayor Johnny De los Reyes spearheaded declogging operations in the flooded area of Colis Street leading to the Tabunok Public Market in Barangay Tabunok.
De los Reyes, along with son, City Administrator John Yre De los Reyes, City Information Officer Vince Monterde and some department heads and City Hall personnel, declogged the drainage last Wednesday afternoon where tons of garbage were collected.
Mayor De los Reyes said he was aware of the complaints of market vendors and passersby about the foul smell of the water that comes from the drainage system.
The drainage is clogged and waste expelled from sewers when it rains.
The mayor partly attributed the rising of flood levels in the street to the clogged drainage and waterway systems due to accumulation of trash.
De los Reyes also contended that all declogging operations would only prove futile unless vendors and the public cooperate and become conscientious citizens for not indiscriminately throwing their garbage that will eventually end up in creeks.
Separately, John Yre said the administration of his father continues to implement projects and remedies to different issues of the city.
John Yre said "Truly serving the people" has been the slogan of the administration.
"The administration, together with the concerned employees for ensuring public safety and convenience, conducted a remedy to one of the major issues at Colis Street, Tabunok, Talisay City dealing with its overflowing canal," John Yre said.
The younger De los Reyes said the declogging operation would not be possible without the help of the city government of Mandaue, which lent its heavy-duty pump trucks to suck up overflowing canal water in the area.
"The administration commends your (City of Mandaue) kindness in helping the City of Talisay solve this problem. Thank you so much, Honorable Jonas Cortes, through Mr. Dario Mago, the city's General Services Officer, for helping the Talisaynons' humble abode. Without your help, this solution would not be made into reality," John Yre said in his letter addressed to Mayor Cortes. (FREEMAN)
