In Mandaue City, brewery workers plant trees at bridge park
CEBU, Philippines- Employees of the San Miguel Brewery were joined by some businessmen and personnel of the Mandaue City Hall in planting trees at the Mandaue Bridge Park last Monday afternoon.
The activity was part of the launching of the Mandaue Business Month.
The Mandaue Bridge Park is located under the Marcelo Fernan Bridge. The city government and the business sector led by the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry had forged a commitment to beautify the area and protect the environment in general.
The business sector in the city wanted the park to be developed into a family park as they have foreseen it as an ideal venue for fun and relaxation.
Aside from the park, they also planted trees at the vicinity of the Cansaga Bridge in Barangay Paknaan.
City officials led by Councilor Diosdado Suico and sports executive director Engineer Ricardo Mendoza and tourism officer Louella Cabanero joined the tree planting activity held past 4 p.m.
Hundreds of seedlings consisting of Palawan Chery, an ornamental tree, Talisay and Palm trees were planted along the sides of the park and by seaside.
Assistant city agriculturist Rolando Tiro said they will make a follow-up by putting in place the tree guard and water the seedlings to ensure high percentage of survival.
"Just like our other corporate social responsibility programs, 'Trees Brew Life' is an investment we will not hesitate to make because we are putting our resources into the environment, a critical factor in the success of our industry," said Enrico Reyes, human resources manager and communications manager of San Miguel Brewery.
"There is no denying the benefits of a tree in maintaining ecological balance: it removes carbon dioxide from air, helps fight global warming , produces oxygen and gives songbirds a home," said Mayor Jonas Cortes in his message read by Suico during a short program that followed.
