Magpale at Takas: Many simple wars for youth to fight

CEBU, Philippines -  The annual commemoration of Cebu's liberation from Japanese occupation during Second World War did not only focus on the celebration but on opportunity for the youth to know of the historic event's importance.

Vice Governor Agnes Magpale reminded the young people who were present in the celebration that while they may not be "privileged" to be a part of  the war, there are still "many simple wars" that they must continue fighting.

"Sa mga batan-on, while they are not privileged to fight the war, I would like to remind them there are so many wars to be fought in this modern day and age. Alang namo sa gobiyerno, we are still fighting against corruption…and kamong mga taga Talisay are fighting simple wars like being good citizens," she said.

Magpale came on behalf of Governor Hilario Davide III, who was out of town yesterday.

Magpale also thanked war veterans "nga nagpatulo sa ilang dugo aron lang kita makakab-ot sa atong kalinaw. Thank you very much, mga veterans. We will not forget you."

Talisay City Mayor Johnny De los Reyes said the activity, held every  year in the city, should be a venue to explain to the youth the importance of  Cebu's liberation from Japan.

Also called "Takas sa Talisay," the landing fete marks the arrival of   American division's  8th  Army led by General William Arnold on March 26, 1945. The landing paved the way for the liberation of Cebu from the Japanese.

Filipino guerrillas of 8th Military District led by Lt. Col. James Cushing assisted the American forces.

Based on historical accounts, more than 400 American soldiers died while 1,700 more were wounded during the battle for Talisay City beachhead. About 500 Japanese soldiers died in the battle.

Like in past years, one of  the activities performed yesterday morning was the offering of wreaths to the liberation shrine.

This was led by De los Reyes, Magpale, Vice Mayor Romeo Villarante and members of the City Council, Central Command Commander of  the Armed Forces of  the Philippines Major Gen. John Bonafos, United States Consul John Domingo and Japanese Capt. Takeshi Ishida.

Also a highlight was the raising of  the Philippine, American and Japanese flags.

In yesterday's reenactment of the landing that happened 69 years ago, more than 1,000 residents and some tourists hit the seashore of Barangay Poblacion where the liberation shrine is located.  (FREEMAN)
