Drug test surprises Danao employees

Jose P. Sollano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Alarmed over the threat of drug addiction among city hall employees, the Danao City government has ordered a surprise drug test among its casual and regular employees.

It was learned that Danao City Mayor Ramon "Nito" Durano III ordered the City Health Office to initiate the surprise drug test among employees.

Yamie Vestal, chief of staff of Vice Mayor Ramon "Red" Durano VI, confirmed to The Freeman that the city government has intensified its campaign against drug addiction problem in the city.

Vestal said it would be apt if the campaign started at the city hall.

Mayor Durano wants to show to the people of Danao City that the city government and the police are serious in its campaign against illegal drugs, Vestal said.

The campaign's main target is not only those city hall employees using illegal drugs, but also residents who are users or drug pushers.

The Freeman learned that there are employees who were found positive of using illegal drugs. Sanctions will be imposed to those who were found positive, although the city hall officials said due process will be followed.

Several arrests have been made by the Danao City Police and other police units with regard to the using and selling of illegal drugs in Danao City.

Some drug pushers operating in nearby town of Carmen are reportedly sourcing their supply of illegal drugs from Danao City.

Last month, the National Bureau of Investigation also arrested big-time drug pushers in Danao City. (FREEMAN)
