CEBU, Philippines - Police in barangay Banilad, Mandaue City shot dead a man and wounded a companion Monday evening when they made an attempt to turn around their motorcycle from a checkpoint.

Richard Caborda, 36, a resident of barangay Tisa, Cebu City was taken to the Mandaue City Hospital for a gunshot wound on his back. He did not reach the hospital alive.

Caborda’s colleague Rojerd Bacarisas, 28, of barangay Tisa was also brought to the same hospital for a leg wound.

Prior to the shooting, the two men snatched a 23-year-old woman’s bag while she was near a hardware store in barangay Banilad that night.

The bag contained a Samsung tablet worth P10,000, her wallet with P500, and some documents.

As it happened, men from the Casuntingan police station were manning a checkpoint at A. S. Fortuna Street, Banilad, Mandaue City when they received a report of a robbery involving a motorcycle.

As the motorcycle approached the checkpoint, PO2 Santiago Binologa backed by PO2 Gil Tomada, signaled it to stop.

But when motorcycle driver Bacarisas failed to pull over, the police fired a warning shot.

Moments later, the police saw Caborda draw a gun but they waited for him to aim it at them before firing.

The motorcycle zigzagged, apparently in an attempt to dodge bullets but exposing Caborda’s back.

Soon, it crashed to the ground.

Police seized a loaded 38 cal. revolver which Caborda held while a. 22 cal. revolver, alleged shabu, drug paraphernalia, and with 4 bullets were taken from Bacarisas.

Later, the woman who was robbed appeared at the area and affirmed that the two men robbed her that night. (FREEMAN)
