In Barangay Umapad: Mandaue allots P20M for drainage overhaul

CEBU, Philippines - The Mandaue City government has set aside P20 million to fix the drainage along Batiller Street in barangay Umapad, Mandaue City.

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes in a speech during the blessing of the newly renovated Umapad barangay hall said the Bids and Awards Committee will conduct the project bidding before the election ban takes effect on Sept. 28.

“Kinahanglan na gyud nga ma-divert ang volume sa water nga  adto diretso na dagat dili kay moagi pa sa Plaridel Street diha sa barangay Alang-alang ug Centro nga ma-compounded ang tubig ug mao na hinoon ang hinungdan sa baha,” Cortes said.

Cortes said fixing the drainage in Umapad will cost P41 million and will be done in two phases. The first phase will cost P20 million which will start next month.

The project involves installing culverts that will direct the flow of rainwater runoff from Plaridel Street to the Mactan Channel.

Barangay Umapad captain Nelson Rubio said flooding has been a problem of the barangay for the past 13 years now.

“Since nahimo kong konsehal 13 years ago, problema na gyud ni namo ang baha apan nga totally completed na ni ang drainage mao na unya ni’y sulbad sa grabeng baha diri sa among barangay ug sa mga kasikbit nga barangay, kay nahimo man gud nga catch basin ning Umapad sa tubig,” Rubio said.

He said the first drainage project in the barangay worsened the floods because the culverts had higher elevation than the surface of the ground.

The new drainage will have 42-inch culverts.

Work will start at its outfall at the Mandaue Bridge Park located under the Marcelo Fernan Bridge.

“Every six meters sa drainage naa gyud manhole, so dili na unya mahitabo nga nay magbara, kay makit-an man dayon kun nay daghan plastic sa sud,” Rubio said. (FREEMAN)
