Liloan asks Aquino for funds to put up community college

Jose P. Sollano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Liloan municipal council has requested President Aquino for funds to finance the construction of a Liloan Community College.

It needs more than P150 million and that the building will rise from a one-hectare lot the town owns.

The resolution states that the 1987 Constitution provides that “The State shall protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education at all levels and shall take appropriate steps to make such education accessible to all.”

It also states that it is a sad reality that many families in Liloan cannot afford the cost of sending their sons and daughters or wards to college-no matter how deserving-precisely because of poverty and the enormous, almost prohibitive cost, that it entails.

“A community college in their own backyard could heighten confidence even among the poorest of the Lilo-anons to grab a chance at education - a chance which might be their only way out of poverty and onward into a life brimming with hope and dignity,” the resolution stated. – (FREEMAN)
