CEBU, Philippines - The Talisay City council approved a proposed resolution that requests the Cebu Provincial government for P1 million as appropriation for tourism, arts, and heritage council.

City Councilor Aldin M. Diaz, who authored the resolution, said the promotion of tourism will provide the necessary impetus to spark economic activity and employment opportunities in the country side.

In his resolution, Diaz asked Governor Hilario Davide to set aside P500,000 and P250,000 each from Vice Governor Agnes Magpale and Board member Raul Alcoseba for the council.

Diaz said the key to the promotion of Talisay City as a tourist destination is the preservation, enhancement and enrichment of its rich history and cultural heritage,

“The preservation, enhancement and promotion of the Cebuano cultural heritage will not only instill pride and a sense of identity in the Cebuano, but will also lead to his social and cultural upliftment,” Diaz said.

The city council in the last Sangguniang Panlungsod created a museum in a bid to preserve the city’s rich cultural history.

The museum would provide learning opportunities to all, especially to the young generation, according to Councilor Dennis B. Basillote, chairman of the committee on education, who authored the ordinance.

The museum is now known as “Museo de Talisay,” which is now placed under the supervision and management of the Department of Education, Division of Talisay City.

It is housed in the Gabaldon Building of Talisay City Central School at Rizal Street in barangay Poblacion.

Under Article II, the Museo de Talisay shall be the repository of Talisay City’s history and rich cultural heritage.

It will preserve the rich local history and cultural heritage which contributed to the development of the Municipality of Talisay then, now a city, for the people’s clearer perspective of the present and better understanding of the future.

The museum will have a curator/officer in charge, museum development staff, treasurer, maintenance/utility and security.

Items such as relics, artifacts, specimens shall be acquired by the museum through donations and loans. Whenever necessary, the museum may purchase relics/artifacts/specimens, subject to the availability of funds.

Donated items should be issued with an acknowledgement receipt signed by the donor and the curator in behalf of the museum. (FREEMAN)
