Talisay government plans to arm sea wardens
CEBU, Philippines - To effectively secure the city’s waters, including Lagundi Reef and other marine sanctuaries, the Talisay City government plans to arm some members of the Fishermen Sea and Ecological Care (FISECA), city Councilor Antonio Bacaltos Jr., chairperson on the committee of environment, said.
The plan came on the heels of allegations that dynamite fishing is rife at Lagundi Reef in barangay Poblacion.
Bacaltos said sea wardens are hesitant to apprehend illegal fishermen who they suspect could be armed.
Some of the wardens have alleged that some fishermen in the past that had intruded into the city’s waters to fish fired warning shots when FISECA members attempted to approach them.
Bacaltos said if the plan is approved, he will chose some members of FISECA to undergo training to handle guns.
Bacaltos said the city will investigate claims that dynamite fishing often occurs at the reef and will ask Councilor Danny Caballero, chairman on the committee on peace and order, for help.
On the other hand, Bacaltos said he has requested Mayor Johnny delos Reyes for two pump boats, with 18 horse power engine each, for FISECA’s use. — (FREEMAN)
