Police volunteers lead Talisay coastal cleanup

Brenda Batuto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Policemen in Talisay City filled nine sacks with garbage as they cleaned Sunday a stretch of a coastal area and the seabed of Lagundi Reef in barangay Poblacion.

The Talisay City Aquanauts, a non-government organization, and Talisay City lifeguards joined the police in the cleaning while the city government took care of the food.

Police Inspector Margienett Yosores of the Talisay City Police Station also put on diving gear and joined the Aquanauts clean up Lagundi Reef.

The activity is held yearly in connection with the celebration of the International Ocean Month.

Yosores said the group collected nine sacks of garbage, six of which came from Lagundi Reef, that were filled with fish nets, sanitary napkins, diapers, and empty sachets of shampoo and coffee, among others.

Some claim coastal residents bury their garbage in the sand and this is eventually washed into the sea when the tide comes.

Yosores is urging residents to have sympathy for marine life.  (FREEMAN)
