Jonas, Luigi promise to prioritize education

CEBU, Philippines - Sixth district representative Luis Gabriel Quisumbing and Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes have vowed to give more priority to education and infrastructure projects now that they have been re-elected.

Quisumbing and Cortes ran and won under the Liberal Party.

Quisumbing won a second term in the sixth district, which comprises Mandaue City and the towns of Cordova and Consolacion, while Cortes is now serving his last term as mayor.

Quisumbing assured his constituents of continuing commitment.

“Daghang salamat sixto distrito, I am humbled and grateful for your vote of confidence.” Let us all work in harmony to attain our vision of a better life in a progressive 6th district of the province of Cebu” Quisuimbing said.

Quisumbing won over Nerissa Soon-Ruiz with an overwhelming 125,815 votes over the latter’s 71,216 votes.

Cortes, who won with a margin of almost 80,000 over Victor Biaño, vowed to prioritize education and infrastructure.

Cortes said his administration has targeted to build 115 classrooms and that 75 classrooms have already been constructed through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

“Nindot kaayo paminawon kay ang mga Mandauehanon naa pa jud compyansa ug pagsalig sa atong administrastion unya tugbangan og maayong serbisyo,” Cortes said.

Does Cortes have a message for Biaño?

“Ang politika lumalabay pero atong pagka Mandauehanon magpabilin. Ako I am open. Gusto nako tanan, bisan opposition, part sa atong governance,” Cortes said.

Cortes garnered 98,972 votes while Biaño got 27,992.

Tuesday afternoon, the entire Liberal Party slate, headed by Cortes, was proclaimed winners together with Vice-mayor Glenn Bercede and City Councilors (in rank) Emmarie Ouano-Dizon (89,660 votes), Jefferson Ceniza (76,807), Diosado Suico (75,313), Editha Cabahug (73,912), Beethoven Andaya (71,299), Nenita Layese (70,035), Jimmy Lumapas (69,332), June Cortes Jr. (68,157), Elstone Dabon (62,182) and Benjamin Basiga (61,062).

Bercede on the other hand got 102,674 votes while Benjamin Luage garnered 12,506 votes. (FREEMAN)
