Mandaue installs tracking devices on garbage trucks

Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Four of Mandaue City's garbage trucks are now equipped with tracking devices as a way to monitor garbage collection.

Other garbage trucks will be equipped soon with similar devices.

The city government opted to install these devices after it discovered that only a few garbage collectors are serious about their work, every so often skipping the interior parts.

The Barangay Solid Management, headed by Engr. Ricardo Mendoza, now checks barangays to know whether collection has been made.

"Sagad sa mga household owners magpataka na lang ug labay sa ilang mga basura kay wa daw kuno'y mga basurero nga mokuha," Mendoza said.

City administrator James Abadia also said it is now high time for the city to procure tracking devices.

He said it has been the practice of most garbage collectors to disregard scheduled garbage collection especially in the interior barangays, which confuses household owners.

"Nasuta naman gud nato nga irregular ang pag-collect sa basura," Abadia said.

The dry run for the tracking devices of garbage trucks started two weeks ago.

If the dry run proves successful, more tracking devices will also be installed in other garbage trucks.

Abadia also showed his mobile phone and claimed that he also monitors the garbage trucks roaming around the city.

He said his mobile phone will give him information of the garbage trucks' speed per hour.  (FREEMAN)
