“New look” for Talisay traffic enforcers proposed

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - If plans push through, traffic enforcers in Talisay City will be wearing steel-toed shoes, displaying metallic badges, and blowing whistles.

However, everything rests on acting Vice Governor Julian “Teban” Daan.

If he approves Talisay City Vice Mayor Alan Bucao’s request for P150,000 in financial assistance for the purchase of shoes, whistles, and badges for the City of Talisay Traffic Operations and Development Authority (CT-TODA), then the enforcers can flaunt their new look.

In a proposed resolution, Bucao, chairman of the committee on public order, safety and traffic management and public utilities, said there is a need to provide enforcers with such things in order to help them become more efficient as well as for their protection.

The primary role of a traffic enforcer is to direct and clear traffic and maintain good road situations favorable to commuters, drivers, and pedestrians.

The nature of their work not only exposes them to physical risks and road accidents but also to violence, Bucao said.

“With a very limited local government funds for peace and order and traffic management, it is just unfeasible to acquire the above mentioned equipment,” Bucao said.

In a separate resolution, Bucao also requested Daan for two motorcycles and 10 bicycles, all for CT-TODA.

As of now, the CT-TODA has only one motorcycle.

“It is a fact that the City of Talisay Traffic Operations and Development Authority is undermanned in terms of the number of enforcers serving and preserving the traffic in the city.  However, the availability of motorcycles and bicycles can expedite the movement and response of Traffic Personnel/Enforcers to alarms, traffic congestion and accidents,” Bucao said. (FREEMAN)
