Free rescue training for Mactan boatmen

- Flor Z. Perolina - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - The Police Community Relations (PCR) team of the Lapu-Lapu City Police is offering free training to boat operators that cater to tourists who want to experience water adventures in the city.

SPO1 Rodito Viovicente of PCR said the training would help boat operators and crew members to help save lives in the event of an accident.

He said that crew members and jet ski and speed boat operators are always in the frontline, thus, it is important for them to have basic rescue training. Most of these crew members reportedly do not possess rescue skills, as they are only concerned primarily of transporting guests from one destination to the other.

Viovicente said they also learned that some operators do not let their men undergo training because they cannot afford to pay the cost.

To address this problem, PCR will tap a trainer from the Philippine Red Cross. PCR will also ask the City Council to pass an ordinance that would require boat crew members to undergo training on basic rescue.

The Philippine Red Cross-Lapu-Lapu Chapter has also conducted further trainings and refresher courses among lifeguards of resorts and hotels with swimming facilities in Mactan to ensure the safety of guests.

Viovicente said they hope that the project would help boost the city’s tourism industry.

This year, the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office recorded series of drowning incidents involving tourists. The City Council has reviewed city ordinances in an attempt to address the matter, but is yet to come up with necessary amendments. —JMO (FREEMAN)
