Mandaue's Ouano Avenue is not "South Point"
CEBU, Philippines - What exactly is the address of the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC)? South Point or Ouano Avenue? Someone who was invited to the “La Presidencia Awards, The Outstanding Taxpayer’s Awards” held last night called The Freeman yesterday afternoon to ask whether that stretch of road at the North Reclamation Area where the CICC is located is still called “Ouano Avenue.”
And where on earth is “South Point,” he wanted to know.
He said he remembers a law naming it as such but every time it is mentioned, the name “South Point” keeps cropping up.
When sought for comment, city administrator James Abadia said Ouano Avenue is still the road’s name.
He said the reason some people call “Ouano Avenue” as “South Point” is because the city has a plan to develop the city-owned F. F. Cruz property as a special economic administrative zone.
The CICC occupies a portion of the property.
He said an existing ordinance calls the area where the CICC is presently located as “City South Special Economic Administrative Zone” but since its acronym would be difficult to remember, or pronounce, the city had suggested calling it “South Point.”
On the other hand, a reclamation project in barangay Labogon will be known as “North Point.”
Abadia said “Ouano Avenue” will remain as the road’s name and will not be replaced by “South Point.” (FREEMAN)
