Lapu-Lapu allocates P20M for material recovery facility
CEBU, Philippines - The Lapu-Lapu City government has set aside P20 million to finance the construction of a material recovery facility in Olango Island and the full closure of the existing dumpsite in barangay Mactan.
Mayor Paz Radaza said the accusation that the city government has ignored the garbage problem is not true.
She said a businessman in Lapu-Lapu City has threatened to take barangay and city officials to court for allegedly disregarding the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2010.
Radaza said more than half of the 19 mainland barangays have already constructed their own material recovery facilities, while others are taking steps to build their own as soon as possible.
The city mayor said the volume of garbage that is sent to the facility has greatly decreased.
“ We have purchased a bio-reactor equipment that allows us to compose two tons of biodegradable waste per day”, she said.
Aside from the manual production of 4,000 to 5,000 4-inch hollow blocks each month, the city government has purchased a 6-inch mechanical hollow block maker that can produce 10,000-12,000 hollow blocks per month using residual waste. - THE FREEMAN
