CEBU, Philippines - The meat monitoring task force of the Mandaue City veterinary office, in sitio Ihawan in barangay Mantuyong Thursday afternoon for a surprise inspection, found three newly slaughtered hogs abandoned in a grassy lot.
The team, led by city veterinarian Dr. Daisy Penetrante, seized the carcasses, which weighed 250 kilos.
Gregorio Garbo, the owner of the carcasses, had allegedly ordered his men to heave the slaughtered animals into the lot when he had probably spied the arrival of the inspection team.
He allegedly left the place to avoid arrest.
Penetrante said the owner violated R.A. 9296 of the Meat Inspection Code of the Philippines for having failed to present these to an inspection.
It is illegal to slaughter pigs and other animals for meat just anywhere in the city because meat that is to be sold to consumers must be slaughtered at the city abattoir where it will be inspected. (FREEMAN)
