Vintage bombs secured

- Jose P. Sollano - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - Mandaue City police chief Senior Superintendent Noel Gillamac yesterday assured that World War II vintage bombs stockpiled at a scrap yard in barangay Looc are out of harm’s way.

Gillamac said police lines have been set up and that the bombs are covered with used tires to minimize damage in case of an explosion.

He said the bombs can be moved to a place for detonation once a C-130 plane becomes available.

The city council of Mandaue adopted a resolution two weeks ago, which urges the immediate disposal of the bombs.

The resolution was addressed to Maj. Carlito Lachica, the Central Command chief of the 2nd explosive ordnance disposal unit.

City Councilor Diosdado Suico introduced the resolution after receiving complaints from jittery residents.

The bombs are now at the scrap yard of Ting Guan, a known buyer of scrap metals in Mandaue City. (FREEMAN)
