City council to strictly enforce law protecting the disabled
CEBU, Philippines - The Mandaue City council approved yesterday a resolution which urges Mayor Jonas Cortes, through the Traffic Enforcement and Management, to implement a provision in the R.A. 7277 or the Magna Carta for Disabled Person and other purpose.
The resolution proposed by city Councilor Elstone Dabon, the chairman of the Committee of Transportation stated that PWDs must be given priorities as stipulated in Section 27 of the law which states that there should be accessibility for the PWDs in public transport.
He said PWDs shall be the government’s concern to foster the capacity for a more meaningful, productive, and satisfying life.
Dabon said he was prompted to draft the resolution after some PWDs complained to him that most public utility vehicles in the city do not reserve their front seat for them for their easy accessibility in riding jeepneys.
Dabon said the government especially the LGUs should take the cudgels for the PWDs.
The resolution was approved during yesterday’s session at the Mandaue City session hall. - THE FREEMAN
