Talisay College expected to be a state college soon

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu first district Rep. Eduardo Gullas yesterday said the Talisay City College is expected to be converted into a state college soon.

“It’s already in the Senate,” Gullas said, adding that it was already approved by the House committee on higher and technical Education. 

Gullas said there is a need to convert the existing college into a state college to ensure its fiscal autonomy and enhance its academic standards.

If the bill is passed into law, not only will TCC become a state college, Gullas said the appropriations and funding for the school would then be shouldered by the national government.

With a budget from the national government, the school would then open more doors to poor but deserving students and would ensure the necessary facility, personnel and instructional materials. 

Under Republic Act 7722 (the Higher Education Act of 1994), which created Ched, the commission is mandated to “rationalize programs and institutions of higher learning and set polices, standards and guidelines for the creation of new ones as well as the conversion or elevation of schools to institutions of higher learning, subject to budgetary limitations and the number of institutions in the province or region wherein creation, conversion or elevation is sought to be made.”

“The measure also aims to upgrade the education capabilities of the institution to provide affordable, but quality education to children,” Gullas said.

Since it’s creation as TCC, according to Gullas, the people of Talisay City must be proud since it earned the top spot in the recently-concluded Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) with one of its passers landing in the top 10, for the first time in its eight-year history. 

Twenty-year-old Diana Rose Zamoras, a graduate of Bachelor of Elementary Education major in Special Education (SPED), earned the seventh spot in the elementary teachers’ level.

The Talisay City College (TCC) ranked first out of four colleges in the country with the most number of board passers during the March 2012 LET Board Exams, with a passing rate of 87.65 percent.

Out of 81 graduates from the TCC who took the exams, 71 passed.

Following Talisay City College is the Carlos A. Hilado Memorial State College-Talisay in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, with 57 out 67 examinees passing the exams.

Sorsogon State College in Sorsogon, Bicol Region ranked third with 60 passers out of 71 examinees.

Pampanga Agricultural School garnered the fourth place with 50 passers out of 60.

Talisay City College has garnered its fourth consecutive year of having one of its graduates entering the top 10.

Back in 2009, TCC elementary education graduate Aiza Pansacala earned the ninth spot.

The following year, fellow TCC alumna Zaldy Villarias earned the tenth spot.

During last year’s LET, another TCC education graduate, Kaye Misa, earned the eighth spot.
