CEBU, Philippines - The Lapu-Lapu City government has purchased seven garbage trucks and three motorcycles for the Solid Waste Management Team.
But Mayor Paz Radaza has denied that the purchase was made in order to prevent businessman Efrain Pelaez from going ahead his threat to take her and 30 barangay captains to court for their alleged failure to comply with the provisions of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Law.
In yesterday’s press conference, Radaza said the bidding for the garbage trucks was made last year and it encountered problems because some changes were made in the specifications.
“Dugay na kini nga giplano sa dakbayan apan karon lang gayud kini napalit gumikan sa mga requirements,” Radaza said.
She said the barangay is still responsible for collecting their garbage.
The city comes in to help only when their trucks bog down.
Earlier, Pelaez lambasted the city government for failure to address the problem he raised five years ago.
He said the city government had allocated millions of pesos to solve the garbage problem. – (FREEMAN)
