Public school teacher to run for salary hike

- John Peterson Villarin -

CEBU, Philippines - A public school teacher will run today from Consolacion town to Talisay City to dramatize public school teachers’ demand for an increase in salaries.

Melina “Twinkle” Ignacio, a Master Teacher who teaches MAPEH at the Don Vicente Rama Memorial National High School, will run for six hours from Consolacion to Talisay City.

Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) representative, Cong. Antonio Tinio, has filed House Bill 2142 or “The Public School Teachers’ Salary Upgrading Act” with Senate Bill 3008 which aims to upgrade the salary of all DepEd teachers.

Ignacio is among women DepEd teachers who are actively pushing for the increase in the starting pay of all teachers from P17,000 to P25,000.

She hopes Congress and the Senate will act on the bills before the scheduled vacation of legislators take effect from March 24 to May 6.

Ignacio’s 30-km run will start at 6:00 a.m. in front of Consolacion Central School. She will proceed to DepEd Mandaue and then to Cebu City Schools Division Office and wind up her run at DepEd Talisay City.

Ignacio is an accomplished marathoner.

She finished 4th among other women runners in a 104-km run from Bogo to Cebu City in 15 hours last November 18. - THE FREEMAN
