Mandaue public market vendor fined P500 for violation of waste law

- Flor Z. Perolina -

CEBU, Philippines - A market vendor at the new Mandaue City public market was fined P500 for disposing of garbage without isolating the organic from the inorganic ones in violation of a city ordinance.

Eco-wardens warned and at the same time issued the erring vendor a citation, Placido Jerusalem, head of eco wardens said.

Jerusalem said the vendor apologized and paid the fine.

Section 1A of City Ordinance No. 10-2006-372 or the “Ecological and Solid Waste Management Ordinance” prohibits the “throwing, dumping, discharging, pouring out, unloading, spilling out waste, refuse or garbage whether solid or liquid in any vacant lot, yards, roads, streets, canals, rivers, creeks, underground drainage, system and other public places.” A P500 fine is imposed on violators.

On the other hand, market administrator Musoline Suliva said segregated garbage is brought to the Material Recovery Facility located near the e-jeepney terminal.

Considering the volume of the garbage, trucks from the Department of General Services collects the segregated garbage twice daily, first at 5 a.m. and next at 8 p.m.

Suliva said biodegradable materials especially from wet markets are treated with chemicals to minimize the emission of foul odor.
