Mandaue tricycle drivers advised to switch to PUJs

- Flor Z. Perolina -

CEBU, Philippines - Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes has tasked lawyer Ernesto Maringuran to gather tricycle operators and drivers and explain why forming themselves into a cooperative is necessary.

Cortes wants Maringuran to tell the operators and drivers that a cooperative can offer an alternative livelihood.

He wants tricycle drivers to shift to driving jeepneys or multicabs.

The mayor said his administration favors a mass transit system in the city in its bid to decongest traffic.

But Cortes made it clear the city has no intention to phase out the tricycles. These vehicles would still be allowed to ply in barangay roads, he said.

Mandaue, he said, serves as the gateway for the north and south sectors of the province.

The city would provide the cooperative some money which would be available to its members for the purpose of buying jeepneys or multicabs.

“Once the coop is formed, the city will provide the seed money nga pwede nilang kahulman to purchase the vehicles,” Cortes said.
