Mandaue public market to maintain cleanliness
CEBU, Philippines - An enforcement team of the Solid Waste Management program of the Mandaue City government has fielded five eco wardens to the new public market located at the back of the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex to ensure that cleanliness is maintained.
Placido Jerusalem, head of the team said eco wardens will issue citation tickets to violators following a one-week information drive directed at the vendors especially those at the wet section.
Section 1.A of City Ordinance No. 10-2006-372 or the “Ecological and Solid Waste Management Ordinance” prohibits the “throwing, dumping, discharging, pouring out, unloading, spilling out waste, refuse or garbage whether solid or liquid in any vacant lot, yards, roads, streets, canals, rivers, creeks, underground drainage system and other public places.” A fine of P500 as provided will be imposed on violators.
Section 1.G of same ordinance prohibits the “disposal of wastes that have not been segregated” and carries a fine of P1,000.
Jerusalem said aside from the vendors, the same ordinance applies to market goers and suppliers.
With this set-up, the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) of the market will be fully utilized.
The new Mandaue Public Market, which opened last January 8, has a waste water treatment facility considering that it is located along the sea.
Other features of the new market include a parking space at the rooftop that can accommodate 200 vehicles, five cold storage areas, air-conditioned food court, activity center, conference hall, among others. - THE FREEMAN
