"Ungo" suspected of killing boy, 10
CEBU, Philippines - A 10-day-old boy was found dead at home in sitio Magay, barangay Tanke, Talisay City at around 5:30 a.m. yesterday and suspected by his family and neighbors to have been killed by a monster or “ungo.” SPO4 Daniel Tarucan of the Talisay City police said the boy’s grandfather Virgil Abarquez first saw blood stains on the kitchen floor and lavatory at around 5:30 a.m.
Abarquez then roused his daughter Kimberly Malacay, 20, mother of the child, from sleep to ask her what the stains were.
After seeing the stains on the floor, Kimberly went back to the living room where she and her husband Joylie and their two children were sleeping, and noticed blood on her youngest son’s nose.
She then checked the child and discovered he was unconscious.
The couple then asked assistance from their aunt, Cristita Mabala, who rushed the child to the TCDH, where a doctor declared the boy dead.
PO3 Ferdinand Pablo, one of the investigators of the incident, said the attending physician, as of press time, could not tell yet establish the cause of the child’s death.
“Gibalbal kuno. Pero di man ta motuo. Mao bitaw ipa-autopsy para mahibaw-an ang cause sa kamatayon sa bata,” said Pablo.
The police saw blood on the nose of the child, blood stains on his navel, but Pablo believes the blood came from the cut of his umbilical cord.
“Ang katong ilang giingun nga naay dugo sa iyang pusod, mura’g sa pinutlan man to pusod kay uga naman,” Pablo said.
Pablo said they saw blood stains on the roof of the house of the Malacays which further made the family and neighbors believe that the child was killed by an “ungo.”
But Pablo said if the family was to believe that the child was killed by an “ungo” at around 2 a.m., the blood stain on the roof would not justify it as it has already dried up when they checked it four hours later.
“Mas fresh pa ang dugo sa kusina kaysa atup,” said the police. “ Pablo said because the case has baffled them, they had invited the Scene of the Crime Operatives for assistance.
Reportedly, the area where the Malacays live has an “ungo,” which neighbors believe had killed the young boy.
Police also discovered a small hole on the roof big enough for a dog or a cat to get through. Blood stains where found near the hole.
Pablo also said the child’s parents told police that the boy’s older sibling stepped on him. But the accident did not, however, result to the child’s abnormal behavior, said the police.
