Photographers arrive in Lapu-Lapu to compete in underwater photo contest

CEBU, Philippines - More than 100 participants from various underwater photography federations all over the globe are scheduled to join the 1st Asian Underwater Federation Photography Championship on November 29.

They arrived yesterday and participated in a dry run/practice at Crimson Resort in barangay Mactan.

The contest aims to further promote and raise the level of awareness on the importance of the safety and protection of the undersea system.

This year's first edition competition theme is "Discover, Educate, Protect."

The competition brings strong education and conservation message, Benedict Reyes, secretary general, Philippine Association on Underwater Activities said.

The Talima Sanctuary is the chosen dive site. Mayor Paz Radaza has waived the conservation fee in Talima as requested by the organizers.

Around five Olango barangays (Talima, Sabang, San Vicente, Tungasan, and Tinggo) will provide a welcome mat at Crimson.

To accompany the divers to Talima are 23 pump boats and 6 jet skis.

A drum and bugle team will be on hand to make the welcome in Talima festive on the day of competition.

Barangay Mactan will provide the welcome mat in Lapu-Lapu with residents lining up the streets.

Radaza said she wants the city to put her best foot forward.

"Lapu Lapu's tourism is the city's bread and butter. It is the main economic driver. The city's marine resources are among Lapu-Lapu's main tourism assets. We are proud of it and we have always worked hard to protect and preserve," she said.
