City dad bats for additional street lights

CEBU, Philippines - A Talisay City councilor has urged the city hall to trim trees of branches and install lights in areas where crimes could likely be committed.

The move came following last Sunday's killing in Palm View Village in barangay Tabunok where the lighting in the neighborhood was poor and branches of trees along the road blocked whatever light the lampposts offered.

"Brightness or the lack of it can affect the mood of a person living in that area. So, to avoid that, we have to install more lights and trim trees to allow the sunshine in," Councilor Danny Caballero in an interview with The FREEMAN said.

Caballero, who visited the place of the Ponce family last Sunday shortly after the gruesome massacre that claimed six people including the house helper, noted the thick branches of trees in the vicinity.

He then ordered the branches pruned.

Also, Caballero said city hall employees recently installed a sodium lamp in the area.

The legislator also hopes that the same will be done in all nooks and crannies in the city.

"Crimes are usually committed in dark areas, and so as not to give criminals an opportunity to victimize any of our city residents, I believe proper lighting should be one of the solutions," said Caballero. - THE FREEMAN
