100 squatters at Mahiga creek agree to move to relocation site

CEBU, Philippines - One hundred families that live along the Mahiga creek in barangay Banilad in Mandaue City have agreed to transfer to the 6.5-hectare relocation site in barangay Paknaan.

During yesterday's meeting of the Mandaue City Board on Socialized Housing (MACBOSH) Tonypeth Juanico, Housing and Homelot Regulation Officer of the Housing and Urban Development Office (HUDO), said the beneficiaries will start transfering to the relocation site anytime this month.

Juanico said these beneficiaries have decided to voluntarily demolish their houses at the creek and agreed that they will also be the ones to construct their own houses in the lot assigned to them at the relocation site.

Each of the 1,200 informal settlers who are beneficiaries will avail of a 28-square meter lot which they will avail under a community mortgage program of the Social Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC) of the national government.
