CEBU, Philippines - Thirty-five job applicants were hired on the spot by the Cebu Mitsumi Inc., the largest electronic firm in Cebu, as Mandaue City marked "Family Week" yesterday.

The Mandaue City government had invited the company to conduct a special recruitment as one of the highlights of the celebration. Mitsumi is located in barangay Sabang, Danao City.

While the recruitment was being held at the city hall ground, a book sale was going on at the city hall plaza.

In his message to more than 2,000 city hall and barangay officials and employees after the flag raising ceremony, Mayor Jonas Cortes said, "One can buy a house but not a home. Every house where love abides is purely a home, sweet home for there a heart can rest. Love exemplified by Christ and not material things, is the source of happiness to the family."

Desiree Peralta, Mitsumi human resource recruitment officer said those who were hired will be trained under a three-year program of the Technical Education, Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and will receive a daily honorarium of P213.75 per day plus a health coverage.

Depending on one's performance, the trainees will be hired by the company after the training and possibly absorbed as regular employees, Peralta said.

Some 41 female applicants took the examination.

Peralta said the company needs some 700 trainees for this month in view of the increasing orders abroad, specifically from the United States, Europe, and Japan.

Cebu Mitsumi, Inc., which manufactures spare parts for cellular phones and computers, has 14,000 employees.
