Dwellers near creek express fear of floods
CEBU, Philippines - One of the fifty residents living near a creek in the boundary of barangay Jagobiao in Mandaue City and Consolacion town has asked the Mandaue City government to find ways to prevent water that overflows from the creek from entering their houses when it rains.
Nelly Monares, one of the affected residents told city hall yesterday that knee-deep floodwater invades their houses every time it rains.
City hall has found out that twigs and tree branches that most likely came from the mountain barangays block the entrance of two culverts, the reason why the creek overflows during a heavy downpour.
Engr. Ricardo Mendoza, who is in charge of solid waste management in the barangay, said that although there is an on-going clean-up drive in the city, the barangay itself will take the initiative to clean its canals before the rains come.
He said a backhoe and dump truck will be sent to the area today to remove all the waste from the culverts so that water can flow freely again.— (FREEMAN)
